So... I have a music history test tomorrow. A listening test, to be precise. Some of the music I like a lot. Some of it is atonal, meaning not actually music. Some of it is just stupid. We are going to have to identify each piece, composer, location, and decade, and tell how we know the piece was written by that particular composer.

Here are some things I will NOT write down as a reason why I know it's that particular composer.

Stravinsky: "This is The Rite Of Spring because it was used in Fantasia. It had DINOSAURS. I like dinosaurs!
RAAAAR!!!!! CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP"

Ives: "This is a Charles Ives piece because it sounds like music, only the pianist is drunk."

Schoenberg: "This is Pierrot lunaire because it sounds like it would sound in my room if someone were running down the fire escape on one side and noisily having sex on the other." (That one courtesy of a fellow sufferer in this computer lab.)

This is quite a bit more depressing than my usual cronopio posts, but I just thought I'd post a link to what I think, to this day, is the most moving, powerful piece of journalism I've ever read. This article, "Eyewitness at the Triangle," kicked off a period of my life in I think middle school where I obsessively researched different historical disasters. Yes, I know I was a rather creepy child. :D That particular disaster hit me so hard, I think, because it felt like such a perfect and pure nightmare, and because I felt like I could have been one of those girls.

Years later, I'm kind of wondering... who was William G. Shepherd? Wikipedia has no information about him at all. All the internet can tell me is that he worked for the Milwaukee Journal. I don't know what else he wrote. I don't know what kind of man he was, though I find it hard to believe anyone who could write that article could be anything but decent and kind. (Maybe this is my hero-worship speaking.) I can't find anything else he's written. But this one article is immortal. It's included in history books, quoted in documentaries, and it moved at least one twelve-year-old girl to tears over 50 years after it was written. I wish there were more information than that.

And while I'm on depressing news, yay, I bet our troops feel so very supported.

Next entry will be happier! I, at least, am doing much better than I have been.
